RPGs

5/1/08 by VTSK

Why are so few RPGs actually living up to their name? It's called a Role Playing Game, meaning you play the role of the character, not just the combat aspects. You should be able to make choices that actually affect your character and always have more than one choice (Oblivion is very bad for this) and the choices should actually make a difference in where the conversation goes, rather than just making the NPC say a slightly different version of the same thing for either answer (Oblivion is also pretty bad for this, too, especially at the beginning of the game). This is the main reason why I want The Witcher and Mass Effect. I'm also looking forward to Fallout 3.

Thats what i though about FFXI. I mean at the end everyone has the same armor, weapons, ect. What is the point of playing it if its hard to show originality in it. It is impossible to play the game by yourself in fact you have to party up for soooo many things, and that takes forever. FFXI is not a game for college student. We just dont have the time. WoW was a bit better because you have a bit more variety of everything. The fact that you could play by yourself was also pretty cool.

Well, I'm not talking so much about the ability to get new armors os much as being a part of the story. I mean, If your the main character, shouldn't you get to make decisions that affect the game? Role Playing games often seem to forget the Role playing part, in that you rarely do more than go around, kill stuff and get better armor. I don't mind this, but if your going to make a game like that, at least don't call it an RPG, cause it's not one. Mass effect is a good example because you get to make choices that have an effect (sometimes). Sorry, I tend to rant about this topic.

Blah blah just another oblivion hater, why cant you people just accept the fact that oblivion is one of the greatest games ever made. Although I have to agree with you about mass effect being great, I'm also looking forward to Fallout 3.(which is ironically made by the same people who made oblivion..)

Because it's not a fact that oblivion is one of the greatest games ever made. It's just your opinion. If it truly was one of the greatest games, do you think so many people would hate it?
